A tall rush like grass found growing in Wet-lands and along the edges of creeks and rivers. The strands have no leaves and are hollow. The Spike-Rush is particularly favoured by the Magpie Geese for construction of their floating nests. The strands may obtain a height of up to 2 metres toward the end of the Wet Season. At this time (Feb, Mar, Apr), the Spike-Rush may be dug from the mud and the underground chestnuts collected. These chestnuts are slightly larger than a golf ball in size.
