This cactus can form low growing bushy colonies covering quite large areas but also can be found growing as isolated "trees" which carry groups of spines and prickly hairs scattered over their surface. Tree forms have a very robust trunk The inner parts on the fleshy leaves and contain a large volume of sticky liquid.
