The Long Yam is found in Tropical Rainforest and closed Tropical Woodland regions. The climbing vine has broad, rich green, heart-shaped leaves with veins all originating from one single leaf stem point (see photo above). The distinctive seed pod has three fine wings, all joined along a central axis or stem. The individual wings are semi-circular to oval in shape. The wire-like vine leads to an underground tuber or 'yam'. These 'yams' are usually located well below ground level and can grow to considerable lengths.
