The Kurrajong is found in open forest areas and coastal sandflat locations. This species is spindly in appearance and rarely grows taller than 3 metres. The very large tri-lobed leaves are greenish-yellow, and appear as if eaten by insects. The red flowers are eye-catching. However, the woody boat-shaped seed pods, which appear from March to May, are the tree's most distinctive feature. They split open to reveal rows of seeds, which are yellow when fully ripe. The inside of the pod and the seeds are covered by sharp felt-like hairs. These hairs are dangerous . . .
