The Honey Ant is only found around Harts Range, north east of Alice Springs, and Papunya, north west of Alice Springs. The ants construct their underground nests in the flat red sandy soil, under a bush or tree. The entrance to the nest is invariably camouflaged among the dead litter and foliage of the host tree. There is only one entrance to the underground chambers. The "feeder" ants collect nectar before taking it underground to give to the "storers" who hide in the side chambers about a metre below the surface.
