A large goanna, growing to 1.6 metres in length, that is found throughout most of the mainland of Australia. Colour varies depending on location, and ranges from light yellow to almost black, with numerous scattered lighter and darker flecks forming irregular cross-bands. The flattened, keeled tail has a white or pale-yellow tip. This goanna lives in underground burrows or hollow logs. The tail leaves a snake-like track, with claw-prints either side, so hunters could track the goanna to its lair. These goanna's have very sharp claws and can inflict a painful bite.
