The Desert Yam grows in sandy soil in Australia arid zone. It usually appears just after rainfall, with its lush green foliage standing out against the sandy countryside. It is often found scrambling or climbing around dead trees or bushes. It produces a pink trumpet-shaped flower, and has distinctive heart shaped leaves. The root system, which has edible underground bulbs, spreads out in all directions from the central stem. The bulbs are usually located about half a metre underground, with each plant capable of producing several bulbs. As the bulbs increase in size they often cause the ground surface . . .
