The Barramundi commonly inhabits inshore waters and estuaries, and can be found a considerable distance up tropical rivers into freshwater billabongs and waterholes. A large silver fish with metallic green or bronze back, it can grow to over a metre in length. The ‘Barra’ shelters around rocks, snags and weed beds during the day, then starts feeding in the late afternoon. Barra hunt at night in fresh waters and the loud ‘chop’ of night-feeding Barra is a good indication of their presence.
